When the bus service to Barrow Bridge ended, we helped persuade the Greater Manchester Transport Executive that some form of service was still needed for the area. They brought in the subsidised Local Link.
Now that a commercial operator has decided to restore a bus service to Barrow Bridge, it was inevitable that the subsidy would be withdrawn. Some wanted to keep both the new bus service (the extended 526) and the subsidised Local Link (cost about £14,500 a year), but that was unrealistic in the present economic climate.
We have managed to get an undertaking from the Integrated Transport Authority that the subsidy will be restored if the extension to the 526 is withdrawn by the commercial operator.
